Poem: The Controller

This is lyrics of a poem I copied from a local magazine; it is a little fact between Minis Bus (Blue Donkey) and Orange Buses in Addis Ababa city.

The Controller

On a bright Sunday morning in Addis

A man took a bus to see his niece.

The bus went up the main road

It shutters opening and closing

Then came in a woman controller

Asking for tickets routine order.

The man says he had lost his ticket.

The woman say “pocket or wallet?,

You won’t go out, if you don’t get it”.

A lot of argument followed

But the journey continued

At last the man pays thrice the price

And then walked a long distance.

Thinking that he had learnt a lessons,

On which tried every trick to unlearn.

He said a bus ticket was very valuable

As rare and precious as jewelry.

What makes a Mini-bus different is

What no one cares about a ticket

The money collector is an arbiter

A jack-of jall-trades next to the driver.

Today 20-Oct is just to remind me the same date in 2001 when I met my lovely Rico at the first time in Centro Lorosae. Rico who I knew 8 years back is still the same “R” I stay with up today…….and this will never change!

Happy Hour with Mr. Henry K Anyidoho

Mr. Henry K Anyidoho is currently acting JSR for UNAMID since Mr. Rodolphe Adada left. He had previous visits to JSCM office but at that time He was Deputy JSR, this time he is the big boss of UNAMID at least.

His visit was mainly a meeting in African Union (AU) as he attended meeting for AU summit.
He was invited by Mr. Mutiso, our head of Office to brief us about Darfur Peace Keeping Deployment and followed with lunch with all the JSCM staff.

Jose da Anunciacao and his UNAMID HR team in Addis Ababa

It is quite a busy days during the week-end as there was a visit of HR team from El-Fasher to our office JSCM in Addis Ababa. The purpose of the visit was to introduce the reform of UN HR system to staff member who are based in JSCM office. The team was headed by their a.i CCPO Mr. Anthony Nweke, also include one of my Timorese colleague, Jose da Anunciacao who is also responsible for the Post Management issues for UNAMID recruitment cell.

Apart from official business during Thursday and Friday, me and Tita with Jose and his Nepalese friend Nandhar, we spent sometimes travelling around this city during Saturday and Sunday before they depart on Sunday. We brought them to different Restaurant such Rodeo Bar, Zebra Grill in Bole, New York Cafe and other bar and shopping center, they got chance to visit Entoto Village as well.

Ethiopian New Year: 1-Meskerem-2002

Ethiopia uses Ethiopian Calendar (EC) which is about 7 years behind to Georgian calendar. This has an effect to world’s public holidays such New Year, Christmas, Easter, Idul Fitri and so on.

Today 11-Sept-2009 (Georgian Calendar) is equal to 1-Meskerem-2002 or in other word; today is the first day of the year in their calendar system. Yeah, today is a new year for them. We had an invitation from some Ethiopian friends (Habesha) to celebrate Ethiopian New Year with them.

I and Tita went around with some Habesha friends to Portugal Restaurant in Maganegna spent almost entire half day there then continued to watch Ethiopian Traditional Dance in Alfian Dance Hall around Bole. The city and most of the road was very quiet as many Ethiopians have travelled to country side and others prefers to celebrate at home.

Exhibition and Bazaar

This Saturday we visited an exhibition around Meskel square. Like others event, this exhibition as well was visited by just a lot of people. IT was very difficult event just to move your body around.

We went there with one my new colleague who has just arrived and joint JSCM as a Military Liaison Officer. He is from Malaysia; I call him Mr. Mohd Melintang.

Think what was there? As any other exhibition, it was just a show of cultural products, movie show, music concert and also bazaar activities.

We spent few moments watching the concert but it was all in Amharic and felt like a bit embarrassed after a bit cloudy followed by small rain, it just remind me that the weather in Addis Ababa is unpredictable.

MELA : New Machado’s family member

Melasiera Lavegnia Derluizia Xavier Machado - 7 days old

On Wednesday, 19-Aug-2009, Carton’s baby was born in Guido Valadares National Hospital in Dili (Timor-Leste) around 10pm local time. Just one hour later, I called and get confirmed that the baby is girl with almost 3.75kg in weight. All the Machado’s family members are happy and welcome this good news. Carton (Carlito Dinis Machado) is my 2^nd youngest brother who married to Amacu (Imaculada).

I myself has delivered my congratulation to him as he become father for the first time and believe both Carton and Amacu will be taking care of little girl MELA (Melasiera Lavegnia Derluizia Xavier Machado).

Miss you little girl!

Entoto Village

At Entoto Hills

Entoto is just one of the villages out of Addis Ababa town, about 15km to the west of Addis Ababa. Entoto is almost green everywhere with so many plantation and trees. The road is smooth as inside the town but it is quite narrow and up down hills.

As we approached Entoto village, there are more Ethiopian Traditional handicraft alone side the road just after Sidist Kilo. After just half an hour, we arrived on top of the hills and we see some youth people sit on the bench looking down to the city. We stopped for a while and taking some pictures, the childrens are very cute as well as those other adults who are also spent their entire evening enjoying the cold weather.

After few moments on top of the hill, we drove back down to the city. The view, weather, and environment were very excited for Manuel Lacerda who we went up there together.

Accident Involving Nery

I couldn’t believe it when I read an email from my young brother Nery, the message was not by himself. According to the sender, Nery got an accident when with his Medical Team (including their Cuban Trainer and other class mate) when they travelled to Leuro (some suburb on the east of Lospalos town).

No injured happened to him but He is still admitted in Lospalos District Hospital for some intensive care.

Later I phoned my parents in Lospalos and my dad confirmed about the situation.

My family is lucky that no serious injured was happened and I hope He is alright.

Our first Timorese visitor

For quite long time, Manuel Lacerda has planned to come to Addis Ababa. He is a UN DPKO worker, working in Darfur at Finance Section. This morning, 9-Aug-2009 he finally landed in Bole airport with Ethiopian Flight from Khartoum. I consider his visit as first Timorese mate who visiting us since we live here in Addis Ababa.

He is here for so called R&R which they entitled every 6 weeks, lucky for them who serving in Darfur and Khartoum.
